What We Believe

The Apostles’ Creed is a summary of what the Church teaches, and of what Christians together believe. Saying the Creed binds Christians together as a believing community, across two millennia, and across various traditions. As we say the Creed, we join Christians past and present, and from all over the world, in proclaiming our common faith.

The Nicene Creed
English, contemporary version

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Why We Believe It

It seems to us irrational to believe that so much life, space, time, matter, energy, complexity and order could come from – nothing. And so, we join most people, across time, in a sense of wonder. We ask questions, often hard questions in the midst of deep pain, about the Who and Why and How of the universe.

It is beyond intriguing to discover the confluence of the Logos, the Word, in the Christian faith and epistemology (way of knowing). We invite you to consider the perfect alignment of three (3) powerful “words” of the God who speaks, and is not silent.

Word 1: Creation.

In Genesis 1, God speaks the universe, the earth and all living creatures into being. This includes human beings made uniquely in God’s image, Imago Dei, capable of reason, creativity, conscience, emotion, memory, imagination, wisdom and relationship with the Lord and other people. We are gardeners, lovers, friends, architects, artists and much more. And because love requires choice, that same choice can be used to disobey God. Eve and Adam followed the wrong voice and their lives fell to shame. Blame. Thorns. Exile. Pain. Death. The Lord cursed the lying serpent and promised the victory of his Messiah through the seed of Eve. The Lord exiled Adam and Eve, and the Lord himself joined their journey of redemption that we find ourselves in, today.

Word 2: A Book unlike any other book.

From Genesis to Revelation, via forty-some writers, in three languages, we find unique agreement, with hundreds of fulfilled prophecies, scientific and archaeological accuracies, geographic detail, a life-giving thread of covenant promises across millennia. All pointing to the promised Messiah – Jesus Christ, and the glory of God.

Word 3: A Person unlike any person.

Jesus Christ, “the Word made flesh, full of grace and truth.” (John 1). God’s heart. His face. His love. No translation needed. He invites us to join the Dance. Truth is a Person.

Evangelicals find this compounding revelation of God in Creation, in his Book, in Jesus Christ to be the best explanation of reality of life in a fallen world. A world of suffering but with the realistic hope of redemption, of joy, of meaning and glory.

Thanks for joining us, on the journey.
